Abstract A method to identify the surface of solid models immersed in fluid flows is devised that examines spatial distribution flow tracers. The fluid–solid interface associated with distance from center a circle centroid tracers ensemble captured within it. theoretical foundation presented for 2D planar interfaces limit continuous tracer distribution. discrete regime analyzed, yielding uncertainty this estimator. Also errors resulting curved are discussed. method's working principle illustrated using synthetic data cambered airfoil, showing one limitations treatment an object thinner than search diameter. readily adapted 3D and applied PTV around juncture. reconstructed expected uncertainty, specific limitations, such as smoothing sharp edges observed.
